HUBBALLI DOCTOR’S PETITION REGARDING OPENING OF WINE SHOPS DISMISSED, COURT IMPOSES COST OF RS. 10,000 ON DOCTOR

HUBBALLI: Renowned psychiatrist Dr Vinod G Kulkarni had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at the Karnataka High Court requesting that liquor shops be kept open for a few hours in a day during 21-day nationwide lockdown.

However, the High Court dismissed the petition and imposed a cost of Rs. 10,000 on the doctor on Tuesday.

A division bench of Justice SA Oka and Justice BV Nagarathna conducted the hearing through video conferencing and directed Dr. Kulkarni to contribute an amount of Rs 10,000 to the Chief Minister Relief Fund.

“There was no public interest involved in allowing opening of wine shops, especially when a large population is deprived of elementary requirement of food, during the lockdown period of 21-days,” the court observed.
