DHARWAD: Kundgol assembly constituency recorded 82.42% polling on Sunday as it headed to the by-polls. In all, 1,56,128 voters, including 81,938 male voters, 74, 188 women voters and 2 other voters, exercised their franchise.
Kundgol headed to the by-polls after CS Shivalli, the Congress legislator and minister died in March.
The Congress is contesting here with the support of its alliance partner, Janata Dal (Secular) against the BJP. The coalition is hoping to win back both seats, Kundagol and Chincholi, to retain its numbers in the state legislature, that has been under constant threat from the BJP who claim to have the people’s mandate.
The BJP won 104 out of the 224 seats in May last year while the Congress has 78 (including the speaker) and the JD(S) has 38 including one from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). There are two independents and two vacant seats in the 225 (including one nominated member) in the lower house of the state legislature.
